What is emergence?

Dictionary.com defines emergence as evolution; moreover, the appearance of new properties or species in the course of development.  Specifically for our class, I think emergence means the development and surfacing of new technologies over time.

  1. The new technologies that have emerged in the past two decades are amazing. Perticularly in the case of music storage. From being able to fit ten songs on a cassette tape to fitting 10,000 on an ipod, the new technologies have made enjoying music much easier to enjoy. What will the next technology be? Let me know, I'll invest in it.

  2. Absolutely. The emergence of technology is amazing. What technology does now on a routine and daily basis, people never could have began to dream of even 15 years ago. Tv's that used to weigh 200 lbs now weigh 40 lbs. Computers that used to be bulky and simple are now slim stylized devices capable of producing high resolution images and delivering wireless internet. Surely 15 years from now technology will have continued to emerge into a blossoming culture.

  3. Emergence has a special meaning in the context of systems theory, in the sense that something greater than the sum of the parts emerges out of their interaction.
