Electrification

Electrification refers to the modification of a system so that it is powered by electricity. This may include equipping a bulidng to run on electricity. Also an example of this would be the change in a trains power from being produced by steam to electricity. We are currently witnessing the electrification of vehicles. Though there have been many other alternatives to gasoline, electric vehicles seem to be of the most prevalent persuasion. I believe it is very likely that we will see a change of fuel source in vehicles during the course of our lifetime. Possibly, it will be electricity.

  1. I like how you brought up the current innovation of turning automobiles over to 100% electrical power. This is an interesting thought considering that electricity in a way is responsible for many of the causes of Global Warming and can now ironically also be the answer.

  2. What do we think of Fordham's electric cars? They are electric right?

  3. The little smart car things that are routinely outrun by squirrels? I believe that they are powered by electricity. It seems that, at least on campus, the electric car still has quite a way to go.

  4. I agree and would not be at all surprised to see some really incredible things happen over the next 10-20 years regarding the use of our natural resources. Electrification is definitely playing a big part as far as its use in the automotive industry. What is key, is further developing it to be an even more efficient and effective technology.

  5. On electric cars, you have to also consider where does that electricity come from?

But electrification also refers to a much bigger process that occurred here in the US at the turn of the last century, as first cities and then the entire countryside was wired for electric power.
