  1. What is entropy?

The American Heritage Dictionary defines entropy in two ways. From a physics standpoint entropy is "the tendency for all matter and energy to evolve towards a state of inert uniformity." In other words, all matter and energy will eventually be broken down to a state of caos. Entropy is the last phase in the laws of thermodynamics.

On a brighter note, entropy is also defined as a measure for the loss of information in a transmitted message.

  2. What is "Information?"

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first known historical meaning of the word information in English was the act of informing, or giving form or shape to the mind, as in education, instruction, or training.

For me, a way to understand it is to define information as that which we don't already know.

This definition appeals to me because it seems to be sort of all-encompassing. If someone asked me the time and I said 4oclock, then I am giving them information because they didn't already know it. If I run down the street screaming "it's 4oclock!" and you already know the time, then I am just a crazy person yelling.
