Telecommunications

Telecommunication is as defined by Websters Dictionary, "communication by electronic or electrical means, as through a radio, TV, computers, etc" (Telecommunications). A vague as this defintion seems, it's really that simple. Telecommunications is the use of an electrical system or medium to communicate at a distance. Whether it is blogging, listening to the radio, or watching television, all are examples of the phenomenon of telecommunications.
It is such an important part of today's world that there is a massive industry based on it. The telecommunication industry, or telecom industry allows people all over the world to communicate utilizing a wide variety of media. These systems are becoming faster and easier each year bringing new and better choices for consumers of the industry. Companies such as Verizon, AT&T, and MCI are all examples of telecommunication companies who offer services to their consumers and allow them to communicate electronically world-wide.

  1. As we watch the telecommunication industry grow are we also seeing our personal forms of communication shrink? I love talking on the phone. It's quicker and faster than meeting with someone to talk, but there is something to be said for face-to-face communication.

I love the advertisement for Dentyne Ice Gum in Grand Central. If you haven't seen it, it's a picture of a guy leaning back into a cab to kiss a girl and the caption reads, "the original instant message."

  2. I personally haven't seen that particular advertisement in Grand Central but it's certainly a creative slogan. I think that while telecommunications continues to grow it impacts our personal forms of communications but not necessarily in a dire form. In some cases, like Verizon, a telecommunications company, the advancements in the field allow us to communicate on a personal level better. But it is certainly something to watch.

  3. NJ Fordham, I think those posters are so cute! I think it is really interesting how we all too commonly forget that the "original instant message" is that of person to person relations. When most people hear "instant message" we think of AIM and how quickly we are able to "instantly" send a message over these technologies. But that takes away from the personal aspect of the communication. How much more would it mean for you if, on your birthday, your friend came and personally wished you a happy birthday rather than just a facebook post? Maybe it's just me, but I think that telecommunications and their personal devices are taking the person out of the communications...

  4. I definitely agree with Lauren, the "personal" in a conversation has been stripped away by AIM and text messages. Most people will admit to using these devices more than actually talking to someone on the phone. Telecommunication industries may be advancing the ways in which we communicate, but maybe their hindering the person to person relationship that is created by actually speaking to someone.

  5. Nice to see the interaction here! I think instant messaging is a key point here. Telecommunications, as the name implies, is about communicating over distance more or less instantaneously.
