Moral Ground

We all know that sex sells. With such a lucrative market, there must be a reason why pornography is so successful. Pornography is so successful because it allows for people to full fill dreams or fantasies which may never be achieved in real life. With that said, is viewing pornography immoral? The class seemed to be divided on the debate of whether virtual funeral crashers were immoral.

Obviously viewing pornography on the Internet could be detrimental to a child. It is up to the parents of that child to ensure that this type of material is not seen by them. It is not the government's responsibility to filter tv, reading, movie, or Internet material. Parents should be mature enough to realize what is appropriate for their child's development and not depend on someone or some entity to do their parenting for them.

The media can create dread for parents and many may over protect their children. Many people do not realize the strength of persuasion that the media has. The media creates news and news is what people talk about. The news also tends to focus on the negative. So when people read an article about how pornography has become an epidemic they quickly over react. If fox news said that an apple a day will send you to the doctor today most people would stop eating apples. So when the government and media propose pornography as a danger their will be steps taken to ban or diminish the sources of porn. I am not saying that porn is a good thing or bad thing. I am saying that you can not control what people will want to do regardless of rules or regulations. They will do it anyway e.g. alcohol abolition.

Do you think pornography is wrong or immoral?

  1. I'm not sure where I stand on this issue. One of the points I 'd like to make is that forms of pornography have been around much longer than the invention of the internet. It has always been true that humans have needs and also fascination with sex. However, the internet has certainly changed the nature of erotica to make it more vulgar than it once was (not that I am an expert). If we look at the erotic stars of that are part of our pop culture today (Jenna Jameson) versus those of the 1950's (Betty Paige), one might say that porn has become an increasingly immoral and degrading medium. It is now a multimillion dollar industry in which women exploit themselves. What once, in the case of Betty Paige, might have been empowering to women to express their supressed sexuality is now questionable. Pornography is now certainly more exploitive, in my view, but others might consider it empowering. I guess I would say that erotica has become more immoral in the cyber age. I am, however, not a woman and it would be interesting to hear a woman's perspective on the issue.

  2. I also have mixed feelings on this issue. On the one hand, a person can say that porn is disgusting and immoral, while on the other hand can view porn as just an expression of self. Although I see both sides, one also has to look at the economic factor of porn. As stated above, the porn industry is a multi billion dollar industry, and in effect, is helping to stimulate our economy (no pun intended). I think on a whole it is a good thing, in the fact that porn is helping our economy. However, I do think that it needs to be censored. Anyone, regardless of any age, can click on a website and bypass the "click here only if you're over 18". Parents need to censor their children, and if you're old enough to make the choice to watch porn, then it is just that; your choice.

  3. Do note that the chapter indicates that the public's perception of risk is much greater than the actual risk that exists on the internet.

  4. I can't respond to Drew's comment because I'm not fully informed on the topic but this does brings to mind a quote from a classic American film, Clueless. In a classroom scene, the main character, Cher says, "Until mankind is peaceful enough not to have violence on the news, there's no point in taking it out of shows that need it for entertainment value!" This quote relates to the topic of pornography on the Internet because if parents can decide what Television shows their kids can and cannot see due to violence, there is no reason why parents can't decide what children ought or ought not to see on the Internet.

  5. I agree with Devon. If it is such an obvious evil, something to be eradicated, why is it still present, in cyberspace or otherwise? Something is fundamentally wrong here.
